There is file in your c:\windows directory called telephon.ini

Do yourself a favor and grab a backup copy of this file onto disk or at least into a subdirectory/folder on your computer.

Why?

This file has been known to suddenly and without warning become corrupt. When that occurs you will receive some very specific error messages. The only way to fix it at this point is to reload a working telephon.ini file.

Sure,it makes sense to do this beforehand, but what recourse is there if no backup file is available? For example, I've deleted my "iexplore.exe", only to find I need it for other programs.

Do I have to delete the entire Windows system in order to be able to reload this file? Is it still lurking there somewhere even if Windows can't find it?
I have only my own dislike of MSIE to blame for this!

If you uninstalled the program then redownload the program and reinstall.

If you deleted the program then you have a couple choices.
Because the file was deleted by hand there is a good chance all the register connections are still in place. Therefor you can just copy the file into the proper directory from a friends computer.

What is the proper directory?
Do a seach on friends computer for iexplore.exe. Whereever you find it is the proper directory.
Copy into the same directory on your computer.

The downfall to this method will come when you and friend have different versions of the same program.

When you and a friend keep pace with each other this is a little like mirroring your own harddrive.

If you don't have access to the same version then revert to downloading and reinstalling from scratch.

The good news is none of this should require reloading windows.

By the way. I refuse to work with any program which requires MSIE.
I think this is bullying and I don't like it.

I just spent 7 hours in a living hell. Something went wrong with my
internet connection such that every time I clicked on an internet link I got the following.

"Rundll32. This program has performed an illegal operation and will be
shutdown. Rundll32 caused an invalid page fault in module TAPI.DLL at
0014:00007638"

After many hours of reinstalling this and upgrading that I found a tiny little message in the corner of the internet suggesting that I look at my telephon.ini file.

Well that was the problem. My telephon.ini file was corrupt -- messedup and too big.

So here is what I suggest.
Make a copy of your existing telephon.ini file and put it on a rescue disk (one of several.) This might come in handy if you ever get a 0014:00007638 error.

I suspect that there is a new program floating around that might be
causing an increase in corruption of the telephon.ini file.

Can someone tell me about Rundll32 and what its function is? I recently switched to a new system, and I've been having some problems due to too many peripheral devices attached to my computer. In a nutshell, I've discovered that I need to switch to EPP mode in BIOS, which I am about to do. However, in the meantime, when I power my computer up, the desktop appears and my system hangs/locks up (the hourglass appears). When I hit CNTRL-ALT-DEL, I get a message telling me that Rundll32 is not responding. I select "end task," and then all is fine. But this shouldn't be happening every time I turn my computer on.

Thanks,

Paul

:Can someone tell me about Rundll32 and what its function is?

Rundll32 appears to be able to launch various functions out of DLLs (Dynamic Link Libraries). This is to say, it could be involved with anything, including starting up and shutting down. If it"s shutting down your computer, my guess is it"s corrupt. Go to http://google.com, type in Rundll32 and see what kinds of mentions/fixes come up.

Good luck,

Actually, if the file becomes corrupted, just delete it. Windows will create a new one automatically.

Basically, this reference tells you to rename your existing telephon.ini file to telephon.old & then run your tapiini.exe file from the Windows System folder to recreate a new telephon.ini file.

I have a Win95 machine and the "runll32 error" started appearing after I upgraded the WinSocks. I already tried upgrading the DUN but still it persisted until I read here about deleting the "telephon.ini" file and it worked!Thanks Harvey! :)

I took a look at my last telephon.ini file and the last four(?) statements were repeating, i.e. "LOCATION blah blah blah", and suddenly its repeated again... "LOCATON blah blah blah" I don't know what the heck it is but the flie sized up to 64K... with all those repeating jargon.

Moral Lesson: Be careful in upgrading!

The only things I know of RUNDLL32 are:
===============================================
1. If you create a *.bat file with your MS-DOS EDIT exe, you can make a pretty neat single click shutdown. Instructions follow:
copy-->RUNDLL32 USER.EXE,ExitWindows<--copy
stick this in your QuickLaunch and you have a safe single clik shutdown.
===============================================
2. I am aware that RUNDLL32 has an extension file. RUNDLL32.LGC in C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG. If this file is opened through the DOS EDIT exe, it reads almost like a road map....... :)
===============================================
3. As far as the last section goes, I have not yet sucessfuly redirected command output with the exception of the ShutDown.bat mentioned above.

RUNDLL32 .. invalid page fault in module TAPI.DLL
I hereby post question and an answer to itself regarding the following error using Microsoft DUN.

Recently I ran into the following error message when trying to start any of my DUN (Dial-Up Networking) program: "Rundll32. This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shutdown." Then followed by a detail error of "Rundll32 caused an invalid page fault in module TAPI.DLL at 0014:007638"

Many of you have raised this question here in this web page. (The first reason I stumbled here is because of the same reason after a long arduous search for solutions). Anyway, the solution is to create a new telephon.ini file. (Please note that there is no "e" letter at the end of the word "telephon".) This file is generally located into your c:\windows\ directory.

Rename your old telephon.ini file to be telephon.old. Then create a new telephon.ini file. Open the file using any text editor and put in the following lines of code:

A default Telephon.ini file for Windows 95 contains the following settings:

[Providers]
NumProviders=1
NextProviderID=2
ProviderID0=1
ProviderFilename0=UNIMDM.TSP

[Provider1]
NumLines=1
NumPhones=0

[HandoffPriorities]
RequestMakeCall=DIALER.EXE

A default Telephon.ini file for Windows 98 contains the following settings:

[Providers]
NumProviders=2
NextProviderID=3
ProviderID0=1
ProviderFilename0=UNIMDM.TSP
ProviderID1=2
ProviderFilename1=WAN.TSP

[Provider1]
NumLines=2
NumPhones=0

[HandoffPriorities]
RequestMakeCall=DIALER.EXE

A default Telephon.ini file for Windows Me contains the following settings:

[Providers]
NumProviders=2
NextProviderID=3
ProviderID0=1
ProviderFilename0=UNIMDM.TSP
ProviderID1=2
ProviderFilename1=WAN.TSP

[Provider1]
NumLines=1
NumPhones=0

[HandoffPriorities]
RequestMakeCall=DIALER.EXE

Save the file and reboot your windows. The error should be gone and everything back to normal.

As I understand, this error was cause by the large telephon.ini file size as we continually use the PC. So, if the file gets to big, this file may become corrupted. So, this is the quick fix for it.

For more information go to... http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q120/2/21.ASP

GOOD LUCK!
