My brother has been playing around with my computer and now I can't access the web. I think he messed around with the control panel or something. Anyway, my computer connect's but doesn't view any web pages. I'm using Dial-Up by the way. I have spen't hours trying to fix this and it's driving me crazy. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

if nothing works how the hell did u post that note up i mean like it takes time to find a website like this and res://C:\windows\system\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm is your local page which means when ur not connected to the internet that page pops up and also when you typed a improper url, my assumption is that there is something wrong with the isp (internet service provider) i use aol (very crapy) and it happens all the time msn tells me im not on the internet but aol is still connected another assumption is that there is something wrong with the proxy maybe ur brother enabled it or something. im not sure if i can help u have to tell me more about the problem

my god now i hope there'll be no mistakes in my rtanslation because i have no english windows...
go to My Computer and there to the folder where your connection are contained... its DFÜ Network on mine but i don't think you hve an ü at your computer, have u? in there you choose the shortcut for the connection you use.. (maybe you have only one so it's quite simple. righklick and choose properties or prefernces or something like that (think the last line) the open window should have 4 pages... klick on Servertypes which should be the second and there'll be a button TCP/IP Preferences/Properties.. voile here you find dns...
well i know pretty bad description but not too simple for me.. maybe someonelse coould tell you the way if you can't get along with my desription

I have this same error message, it is not an ISP issue or a browser issue, I've debugged those. shdoclc.dll is a windows shell file. I've found what looks like a possible fix on a German or Swiss site, http://www.misitio.ch/cgi-bin/mb/data/752.shtml, but am having trouble with translation

If the AOL bit isn't applicable to you guys then it could be the winsock2 key that is causing the trouble.

I've just tripped over your problem. Try going to internet option/connections/Lan settings and open(untick) the proxy server boxes. With luck that should override the system and allow you to get on to the net. It worked for me and my system then reset itself.

I too am having the same problem but only with IE 6.0 I get the shdoclc.dll error I don't usually use IE so I am not sure what set ift off but try using an IE shell like netcaptor or a free one like Avant previously Gorilla or Mozilla all of those work fine for me, I have tried replacing the dll but I get entry point not found unable to register, I think it is because that dll auto registers, also reinstalling IE didn't work either if there are any other suggestions let me know.

I have trouble with the shdoclc.dll file but of a different nature. I have internet conn. no dns errors, am on a cable conn.(roadrunner). My problem manifests itself via shdoclc.dll coming up in my virus protection. The actual file- C:\windows\system\shdoclc.dll- comes up as a virus (i use ontrack fix-it utilities). I clean (& have removed before), then run my virus scanner and all is clear. Later it will show up again (virus detected) & is when i click arbitrarily in my files on my computer. Have reformatted system with a ghost speedloader which was a clean load. ANY THOUGHTS..

Got the same problem. IE5.5 gets this error. Netscape says there might be a proxy problem. YM simply does not connect. Can ping remote sites.
Reloaded the SOCKS files - no help.
Tried to reload IE but setup could not find download sites info. online.
Verizon online help says disable DNS in the TCPIP Adapter and if that doesn't work, reload TCPIP.

I'll bet everyone of you with this problem is (or was) using "iMesh." The corrupting software is called CommonName, and it is downloaded "free" with iMesh. The idea of "CommonName" is that instead of typing "www.ford.com" to visit Ford Motor company, you just type "ford" and CommonName sends you to the closest company that sells Fords--and gets paid for it. So now that you know the problem, the only valid solution is re-installing a non-corrupted version of shdoclc.dll. If you delete CommonName, you are in even worse trouble, because it will delete the file completely, not just corrupt it. ONLY KNOWN SOLUTION, RE-INSTALL Internet Explorer! In the list of "okay's" you agreed to in installing iMesh, you agreed it was okay to monkey with your system. This dispicable act was both LEGAL, and AGREED to. (Nothing in life--including iMesh--is free!)

I was getting "Can't display page. DNS error" message and the properties of this page showed res://c:\windows\system\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm. I could refresh the page and it would then show OK. In my case it was being caused by a download application called Red Swoosh. Uninstalled it and everything is back to normal. Check your task list to see if anything unexpected is there. Yes, I remember that crappy "res//c:windows/system/shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm" error! The one that racks my brain for days!
These tips I have found after countless hours invested myself finding what works with little much to find on the Web about this..
I've fixed four or five machines like this before and it's been a challenge. I love a challenge because I am not a quitter.
One machine I fixed like this after re-installing Win98 CD UPGRADE and not the FULL version. Upgrade version of Windows re-writes all the files over. And yes, do it with a DOS boot (floppy disk) ONLY! This is the way it fully cleans up all the files.
I fixed one machine before like this by uninstalling Dial-Up Networking and all the Network protocals and re-installing per instructions found on the web.
I fixed one machine by deleting all the VXD and Winsock entries per Microsoft's website here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;241344
This method worked for me best.
I fixed another machine like this by zapping out the hard drive, re-format, and install Windows the cowardly way. Hee hee, yep we all have to do it some time.

Oh, yes... I forgot something to say else...
This type of error is usually found on machines with traces of multiple free internets and those who have a lot of spyware in the registry. Something about different free internet software CDs installed and tried, they cancel themselves out and choke Winsock, is my theory.
Of course different ISP CDs installed, cookies, internet accelorators and spyware together combined have something to do with it, but if you find a proxy in the Dial-Up Properties, it is almost certain you have a spyware choking your VXDs and Winsock for you to see webpages. I even tried a free spyware remover such as Ad-Aware, but not updated, maybe that would have helped because this last one I am fixing now had the new version to the Internet Accelerator NETSETTER. If it is not updated spyware will still rule over that proxy setting no matter how many times I unchecked it. and rebooted.

PS Oh, yes... I forgot something else and more to say...
I even re-installed Internet Explorer for each machine and this does NOT usually fix this type of problem.
Deleting the registry keys regarding Winsock and VXD works best, but you must re-install DUN (Dial-Up Networking) AND... Microsoft for Networks Client, Dial-up Adapter, and TCP/IP afterwards.
Here they are, those precious registry keys...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\AFVXD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\DHCP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\MSTCP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RemoteAccess\Authentication\SMM_Files
PS If this helped, please take the time to thank me. So many people need help from those experienced thus saving them lots of headache. If you drop me a email saying thanks, maybe I'd might post more tips here on this website from what you share.

I removed ALL the items from my Network properties window, restarted the computer in safe mode, reinstalled Client for Microsoft Networks in the Network properties window, rebooted in normal mode, and then Windows detected my NIC card, installed it and then I had to reinstall Client for Microsoft Networks AGAIN because it wasn't there. Had this problem myself, on 3-4 occasions, found this to be the best way to sort it. --
Page Cannot Be Displayed, DNS errors, etc are often accompanied by these URLs.
If you are unable to browse any web pages, but can get your email, you probably need to rebuild Winsock (Windows Sockets).
This has also been known to resolve issues with invalid page faults in RPCRT4.DLL
Delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock and \Winsock2 keys from the registry. (Start, Run, Regedit, Find, winsock)
Go into Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup. Select Communications and hit Details.
Uncheck Dial-Up Networking. Close out. Restart.
Go back in and check it again. Restart.
--
The Navigation Cancelled errors typically are caused by corruption of TCP/IP.
Remove it from the Network Configuration by right-clicking My Network Places (Control Panel) and hitting Properties, then selecting anything including "TCP/IP" and hitting Remove.
Close out and restart.
Go back in and click Add. Select Protocol and click Add. Select Microsoft of the
manufacturer and TCP/IP as the protocol. Click OK.
Close out and restart.
Above works easy for Win 9x & Me. Similar with Win2k, firstly delete winsock(&32) thru regedit, & go thru Dial Up Net properties, Options, etc & remove TCP/IP, & close out, re-start.
Go thru to properties agn & re-install.
Hope this helps & fwd to your pals with the problem/solution!
All the best
Phil

I have been working on a customer's computer that has had an old version of AOL previously installed. The AOL software was uninstalled and the customer is now using Earthlink for his ISP.

I reinstalled Winsock2 from the setup file at

Contributing more info concerning this techincal issue. See my articles posted above.
Another interesting thing discovered with this kind of error, is that the "page not found" error only means you can NOT see any of the other websites from a computer with this type of error, but you are ONLY allowed to view websites from your internet service provider's backbone.
For instance, when I dialed up and accessed the Internet from the monthly dial-up service of BUYERSONLINE.COM with a machine having the "page not found" errors, I was not able to view any web pages at all...; but wait... EXCEPT... I COULD view web pages..., but... ONLY from my backbone provider!!
For example, I was currently working on a computer having these same internet problems again. It would connect thru from the dial-up internet service but not to any website. Email would work and maybe instant messengers would work (not tested). Indeed, the computer was verified to have the error of "WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm" and the text on the screen "Page not found".
While connected to the ISP, I entered any website I wanted like Google.com or Yahoo.com and the same thing happened. And if I entered Buyersonline.com, the same thing happened, but if I entered the website of their backbone provider of blahblahblah.com (not given due to security reasons), THE INTERNET WORKED!!

LAN MAN

(NOTE: This fix is for SA's only.)
This will not benefit those running Windows 98/ME/XP.
Most of these posts have been from users past experience followed by trial and error. I have
not had this problem on a personal pc using dial up to an ISP but I suspect spyware is to blame for everyone's problem.
I'm a System Administrator that has had this problem on many of our workstations and everyone of them users were unknowingly downloading spy-ware or commonware. For any
SA's having this problem on a Windows NT/2K platform.
The solution is quite simple so dont waste your time reloading I.E., Proxy Server or your IIS.
Steps:
Right click on network neighborhood
click in TCP/IP and verify all your
settings match the server's (DNS/WINS) tabs.
example: primary dns 208.34.67.44
secondary dns 208.34.67.44
complete each tab with the domain name suffix
and fill in your primary & secondary WINS
after verifying all settings do in fact match
(minus DHCP which shouldnt change)
close TCP/IP properties and restart machine.
BAM!!! your users will now be able to surf the net again.
Changing your Proxy settings settings or bypassing the proxy all together does not work!!!
There are a number of different things I have tried that worked temp like re-joining the domain but this one is the Mother fix.
Respectfully,
LAN MAN administrator

Can't view my homepage
I am using Windows 98 (SE I think) as my operating system. I use Internet Explorer 5.50.452 something or other most of the time and have P0G0 set as my homepage. Up until yesterday, I have not had any problems. However, when I booted up and logged on (Use dial up network with a 56K modem) my home page would not load and instead, I got a "page can not be displayed" message. I tried several times ...I updated my Java some time ago and I was thinking that maybe Netscape would work but it doesn't work through Netscape either. I turned my PC on this morning thinking perhaps it was a problem with the site and still, the same thing happened. I tried several times and was finally able to read the message displayed for a second on the bottom of the IE page. the error message was http://C\WINDOWS\SYSTEMS\SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm I looked in my network and can not find my proxy settings in case the problem is with my ISP. I have not added anything to this system, no new downloads for quite sometime. (no problems since the Jave correction)Do you have any suggestions? I hate the thought of crashing my PC and starting all over again. Is there a quick, EASY ,and easy to understand way to fix this problem?

One more thing..I can view any other websites I want to visit. Is this problem going to get worse? I read something about possibly being caused by a virus. I have had a virus which my virus scan caught sent to me 3 times in the last week. I quarantined it and deleted it completely from my pc...I don't remember exactly it was called something like bgbear. Since I handled it this way, and I did a virus scan on my PC and nothing showed, how likely is it that my pc has been infected...also, everytime I use e mail, my Virus scan scans it coming in or going out...and it showed nothing.

Hi,
I'had the same problem on my computer at work after playing around and installing / removing couple of programs. It's runnig under NT, but LanMan's fix didn't do a thing (sorry, tried before). So spend the Friday up to 0:30 in the office, to no result. Found an interresting post in another forum today, concerning an incomplete Service Pack installation.
In my case running an SP 6 Update (of NT) again did the trick (removed IE6 and reinstalled it last week, is SP1). Hope this is useful to someone out there.
Best wishes from Hamburg

What keeps popping up 20 to 30 times? adverts or web pages?
If adverts try downloading ADAWARE or SPYBOT, you can find both of them free.
Then go to either:
For WinXP
http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe
For Win98, WinMe
http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html
download and run the program to fix the DNS cant connect error.
If this is not what you meant, let me know..
Hope it helps.

Please try the following:
Click the Refresh button, or try again later.
If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,

We have WinXP Professional. We have had it for about 6 months, and it is running pretty good.
We also have AOL 8.0. We have had AOL since 5.0, and it has worked pretty good for us over the years.
A few months ago we got Cox cable, and that is working pretty good. Sometimes we use Internet Explorer directly, sometimes we connect to the internet with AOL 8.0.
We sometimes use AOL 8.0 dial-up on our other, old computer when a lot of family members want to use our main computer with the cable hookup.
The AOL 8.0 dial-up works pretty good, too.
Reinstalling WinXP: Have you thought about formatting and reinstalling WinXP?
When we first got WinXP Pro, we had to install it a few times before it worked properly.
Can you use a friend's or neighbor's computer to try to search google for the shdolc problem?
Double check your "advanced" settings in "Internet Options". For instance, do you have Java Script checked correctly?

So you have cable like we do. We have Cox cable. We often use just Internet Explorer, but sometimes we use AOL 8.0 through our cable.
What cable modem do you have? We bought a Motorola Surfboard. Is you modem alright?
You say you can connect to some web sites, but not others.
Suggestion: Go into Internet Explorer and double check your settings in "Advanced" at the top of the screen.
Pay special attention to the "Browsing" and "Security" sections. Your security settings might be wrong in "Advanced."
Try the Default settings for the Advanced category.
Do you have Java listed in the "Advanced" category? mirse@aol.com
|
Sufy

In advanced, they are on default and i have cable modem surfboard with a linksys router.
|
mirse
11/06/03
|
Router: Can you disconnect the router? As an experiment, have you tried to connect your computer to the cable modem and the internet directly without going through the router?
How many computers do you have hooked up to the router?
Default in "Advanced": Since you have it on default, maybe you should try a custom setting, that is, go to each item in "advanced" and enable everything that you can, such as the Active X items. That is, make sure all the Active X items are open/enabled.
Again, you might consider trying to format and re-install WinXP.
What are the brand and specs of you computer? For instance, we use a Compaq Presario 5245 that we bought new a few years ago: AMD-K6-2, 400 MHz, 10GB harddrive.
It originally came with Win98, 96MB of memory.
We have since upgraded to WinXP, 256 memory, and 80 GB Western Digital hardrive.
We connect to Cox Cable through an onboard NIC that came with the computer, and a Motorola Surfboard cable modem.
Some family members like to connect to the internet through Cox cable using Internet Explorer, while others like to use AOL 8.0. mirse@aol.com

Hooked up to two computers? Are both computers the same?
If it were me, I would try this experiment: I would just hook up one computer directly to the cable modem until I was able to connect at least one computer to all web pages.
Again, I would double check every item in Internet Options, especially in the "Advanced" category. I would set the items manually instead of using "default".
As a test, under the category "Advanced", I would check or uncheck items in such places like "Security" to give web sites easy access to your computer.
For instance, under "Browsing" in "Advanced", I would check/uncheck items in order to allow as many web pages as possible access to your computer without first having to provide some type of certification.
I would check/uncheck the Active X items in "Advanced" to allow as many web pages as possible access to your computer.
Do you have Java and JavaScript enabled?
Again, you might consider formatting and re-insalling WinXP as a last resort. mirse@aol.com

Honestly, I don't know if the problem has to do ith your Java settings or not.
But it would not hurt to double-check your Java settings, such as in "Security" and in "Advanced."
For instance, in "Advanced",I have "Microsoft VM" listed. I have check marks next to two of the three items listed.
In "Security", I have "Microsoft VM". I have it set to "Medium Safety".
Again, if it were me, I would connect only one computer to the modem and Comcast cable, and I would not connect the second computer until the first one could access web sites correctly.
NOTE: Cookies Problem: I just read in a computer magazine that some search engines like google use cookies.
Maybe your Internet Explorer settings somehow are blocking cookies from sites like google and other sites, and that is why you cannot access some sites. mirse@aol.com

As an experiment, have you tried to disconnect one of the computers from the internet, that is, have you tried an experiment where you connect only one computer directly to the cable modem? Don't use USB during this experiment.

What a system recovery does is it recovers your computer to the point when u bought your computer. When you do a recovery, it does not delete any of your files. Though, if you play any games such as wc3, cs, or any buisness programs that may use cdkeys, you will have to type your cd keys in again. I am not sure if any other computers have it. I have windows XP, so what i did was i went to start then i went to was PC Recovery tools. Then it says HP PC system recovery. If you can not find this exact file, you may try to search for something or type "system recovery" well good luck! I hope this helps. =)

THANKS Morace! I too could not pull up the internet. It would say The page cannot be displayed, cannot find server or Dns error- Internet Explorer. I KNEW this was due to Imesh. Last night I closed out of Imesh and it changed my home page to Network Essentials, and then spammed me with porn advertisements. After that it opened both of my computer drives, the re-writable drive and the dvd drive. The DVD drive flung the door right open, and then on the screen it said ha,ha, that's what you get for being naughty. I WARN any of you, get Imesh off of your computers before you encounter some real problems. So after racking our brains we came across this site and Morace's solution to use The Windows 98 Winsock2Fix. I went ahead and used it and everything was back to normal within 5 minutes. THANK YOU again Morace for the suggestion, and thank you to the creator of the program.
P.S. Kazaa is another culprit that messed up our other computer that was only a few months old. After uninstalling Kazaa, no more problems with that computer.

Patrick, your post in the wrong thread, and is lost out here. Look at the home page carefully ; scroll down and you'll find two threads addressing eanthology problems. Don't format your machine just yet... It can be removed !
