I have this same problem. I called Compaq @ (800)652-6672 and I was told it was a software problem but my pc is out of warranty so they couldn't help me. If anyone else has a valid warranty that would be the best way to go. And please post your answer so as I can get mine fixed. Thank You. :-)

by the way do any of you have kazaa? I had another runtime error and found out through newbie that it was due to improper deinstallation of kazaa. Since then I have reinstalled it though, but kazaa has been dormant for awhile now (shutting it off by the active program bar tends to keep popups from appearing. anyways just wondering if maybe it's kazaa related again..cheers

Hi...OK so I took the folder marked "lutil" (which was located in the compaq folder)and put it in the recycling bin. The runtime error stopped. Today I right clicked on the lutil folder which was still in the trash and clicked on restore. So far I have not had any problems..Ciao

This error happens due to a back web lite spyware infestation. I resolved the issue by running spybot search and destroy which can be found here http://security.kolla.de/ After running spybot with all updates the error disappeared.

How do I fix runtime error 5 at 001..
I get a window simply stating "Runtime Error 5 at 00917084". They alway come in twos. When I click the OK box, two more runtime errors at 5 pop up with different numbers. I have used ad-aware, as specified by the tech support people and nothing happened. Any ideas? It seems to be affecting my Outlook program, won't let me shut down through start and internet explorer is not working right sometimes. Help!! Thanks. Lee

I too have tried everything to eliminate this runtime error message. Uninstalling programs, reinstalling XP, Kazaa, registry keys, config util., virus software. NOTHING fixes this problem (except a hammer). It's like have two fleas on your body except they are UNDER your skin. All the techies I know are without a clue. There seems to be some common issues though, games like Coumter STrike, Kazaa and other programs have some kind of incompatability.

OK I just found this site in my favorites and realized that I never reported my successes.

Go to the Compaq folder and remove the lutil by placing the lutil subfolder into the recycling bin...

Earlier I said I had no problem by putting it back...this didn't last. I am suggesting that the lutil folder should be left in the recycling bin.

I've no idea what its application is but I do not miss it.

project1 runtime error 53 no file found
Hi,

I am running Windows 98SE and have the same problem of Project1 Runtime Error 53 during startup. I tried various ways of loading windows and I discover that the problem disappear when I prevent windows from running its drivers. The problem is after narrowing it down to that, I am now at a loss as to what I can do next to solve the problem.

I am not sure but it seems to me that the problem came about after I tried deleting a spyware process and was requested to restart my computer.

Would appreciate it if anyone can help out on this.

Thanks!

tas

project1 runtime error 53 no file found
hi guys,

further to my earlier posting.. i have discovered that for my problem, the cause of it appears to be this program called "Sysu". What I did then is to run a find for this in my registry and managed to find it. Deleted that from my registry and my comp works again.

Would not advise you guys to do the same thing though cos i have no idea absolutely on what "Sysu" is.

Anyone more enlightened can advise?

Thanks!

tas

project1 runtime error 53 no file found
Hi guys,

Did some quick check and found this. If you guys look into your "Program Files" folder and find a "ddm" folder in which there are programs such as "sysu.exe" and "ddm_d.exe", then I suspect that your problem is similar to mine.

My guess is that these are spyware programs since after running one of them, I used Ad-Aware to check my system and found a couple of spyware items in my registry and cookies.

I will leave it up to you guys to decide whether you want to remove the "sysu" that is in your registry then. Be careful though in editing your registry if you so choose to. One wrong entry can bring your system down.

Hope this helps!

Cya and have fun!

How do I fix project1 runtime error 53
I tried both tas and billy's ways in tackling this "project1 run-time error 53". Unfortuantely I am not able to solve it. I can't find any ddm or sysu folder or related files in my computer. There is no file or folder name like ddm in my registry either. I beleive tas is right about this error only appears when drivers are loaded. I just want to see if anyone else has other way to solve this annoying problem.

Thank you!

Scott

Hi,

I did have the "project1 runtime error 53 no file found" problem and solved it by deleting the ddm folder.
What I want to add is that it might be a virus (a trojan horse). My antivirus found six infected files named "optimize.exe" in the subfolders of ddm.
There are also several programs ("sysu" is among them) that you must remove from the cookies in C:\Document and Settings\"Your name"\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files (if you have Windows XP)

Hope this helps.
Axel.

I have been in computer school for 2 years and they really don't prepare you for these except to go work on the registry. Not being to confident in my abilities I used the registry mechanic for 120 problems that the free version only fixes 6 at a time and I still had the problem along with multiple boots. Then I tried the to delete the ddm folder. Nope, I had to go into each folder in the ddm folder and delete them. WOW!!! It worked.
Thanks for the help. I seen the optimize.exe and others everything in the ddm folder is gone. Hopefully, I didn't get too delete happy. We'll see... Peace
Dave

the ddm program (and the associated programs, most of which are listed above) are spyware.
The latest updates for SpyBot are capable of removing them completely.
For those that have just deleted the files and directories, you will find this has not completely removed the problem (there are registry settings that help to reload the files onto your computer). For those that have done that, you may also need to perform the following steps to remove it completely:

1) end the following process: sysu.exe, this is what causes the problems and seems to be an error in whoever wrote the program, kinda negates the purpose of it if nothing can be run by the user.

2) uninstall
Active Alert

3) delete the following folders:

C:\Programs\ddm
C:\Programs\pup
C:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer

in C:\...\system32\ look for .exe files that start with a random 7/12 digit number eg. 37473696.exe, check the properties to see if they were originally named winpup.exe and delete them

search for and delete the following:

actalert.exe
ddm.exe
ddm_d.exe
msbb.exe
optimize.exe
pup.exe
sysu.exe
winpup.exe

4) using Regedit (usual warning about backing up first)

delete these keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and/or RunOnce that refers to ddm, *randomnumber*.exe or sysu.exe.

HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache
delete the keyfile C:\progra~1\ddm\sysu.exe

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pup.setup

delete these folders:

HKEY CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{539AFCA0-9542-44F0-A286-9B8857DFD30A}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F5192746-22D6-41BD-9D2D-1E75D14FBD3C}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{2C4AC0A2-7DA0-4061-B57A-C292A8F3B109}

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Avenue Media

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\\Dynamic Desktop Media

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ddm

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\pup

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Internet Optimizer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\Internet Optimizer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Internet Optimizer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Internet Optimizer Active Alert

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Internet Optimizer Software Installer

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\msbb

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\nCase

5) using msconfig: uncheck the entry that corresponds to a file you deleted

6) open IE > Tools Menu > Internet Options > Settings > View Objects
locate the installed pesty little ddm and delete it.

This is a dumb question:
What the h-edouble-toothpicks is a "Runtime Error"?
This has always puzzled me.
I am a newbie.
Gwen

01/24/04
Dave, thanks for this post. It was great and fixed my problem!

raven26, If you see a red x it's not your fault and there's nothing you can do to fix it, unless you own the html page that has the picture embedded in it.
A red x means there's supposed to be a picture there, but whoever built the page put an invalid link to the picture file, or maybe even spelled the name of the picture file incorrectly so the web page does not know how to show the picture.
If you own the web page, fix the link or check the spelling of the file name that relates to the picture!

I recently installed SIMS Hot Date and SIMS Superstar to my computer (already had SIMS Deluxe Edition installed). After installing the two expansion packs I noticed that the game speed slowed down ALOT, so I uninstalled THE SIMS. I then re-installed THE SIMS Deluxe Edition, when I went to play the game I got a Runtime Error involving sims.exe. What do I need to do to fix it?
