WERE8.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt (appcompat.txt)

When running internet explorer I get the following two error messages:

C:\DOCUME~1\MYUSERNAME\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERE8.tmp.dir00\iexplore.exe.mdmp

C:\DOCUME~1\MYUSERNAME\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERE8.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

I was running software that removes spyware (Ad-aware 6.0, Spybot, and HijackThis). One one of these programs, something in my WERE8.tmp.dir00 kept comming up.. and i couldnt delete it. I got frustrated and deleted them manually. Now.. this was a mistake because my internet explorer and opera 7 browsers have been lagging ever since.

When I click on links, sometimes they open, sometimes they dont. they lag.. for about 5 minutes or more. The program may stop responding every once and awhile. I cannot right click and select open in new window... I have to copy the shortcut and do this manually or the program stops responding and i have to restart my computer.

My whole system has been lagging pretty bad ever since those folders disappeared. I kinda wish there was some easy way to get them back... and all the files that were in there. So... if anyone knows anything.. please get back to me soon.

I had contacted my customer support people. I am using a Pentium 4 computer with Windows XP. They told me you can try and do a system restore to the date prior to when you think the files poofed... or you will just end up reinstalling windows.. which isnt so bad. you will be able to get rid of a lot of unnecessary junk.

Hope this helps... and let me know if you know anything!

I have a problem that is very similar to this. I recently downloaded Spybot and adaware and ran it on my computer. That is what I am guessing that it is because people that are having this same issue, it looks like most of them have downloaded the same program. My problem is when any of my non-privileged users on Win XP Home tries to use the Internet, the get that automatic error message. I looked at the details of it and noticed that it originates from C:\DOCUME~1\USERNAME\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER1.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt
I change them to administrating privileges, and they have no problems. I am going to try and restore those files that adaware and spybot removed to see if I can get it to work again.
Thanks

I have this exact same problem. One thing that I know for sure is that it has to do with the motherboard. ( i have an Albatron KX 400+ PRO ). I changed my PC components a few times, and everything points to the motherboard. While I am looking for a solution, why dont u guys post the name of ur motherboards ?

PS : I have a feeling that it happened after I did an update on Windows XP. Try to remove the updates in add/remove programs and see what happens.

First I would like you to know that I know almost nothing about XP and have never had any experience with it. So take this for what it's worth.
I believe that;

has hit on the core of the problem. XP has 'real' securities built in, unlike my 98SE. It sounds like re-configuring the privileges of the non-Administrators should solve the problem.
Just a wild guess, but worth trying before re-installs or 'God Forbid', a low level.

Similar problem. When attempting to search clip art while in Word or Publisher, the applications hang. This is Windows XP/Office XP. Error messages refer to WINWORD.EXE, PUBLISHER.EXE, and Appcompat.txt. Event viewer gives errors reference Event ID 1002, Source Hanging Application. Computer is a new Dell running NTFS permissions. Both user account and administrator account experience the same problem. Clip art worked fine a couple of months ago. Nothing new has been installed on the computer, but new internet security functionality has been implemented on the network. I have seen Internet Explorer security messages that may be related to this problem. Computer all of a sudden began working normally this morning.

hey, I had the same problem for about a week..I was running MSN Messenger 5.0, but downloaded 6.0 last night, and haven't had any problems since. I don't know a lot about this kind of stuff, so I'm not sure if upgrading MSN is what solved the problem or if it was just a coincidence. Just thought I'd let everyone know so you can try it out, later.

un-install the damn yahoo program
go to google.com and do a search for
REGCLEAN - it is a microsoft product -
after killing ALL YAHOO APP - run reg clean and see if the issues is still around -
it is gone for me now, but for some reason i think it has to do with an incompatibility with yahoo messenger, and either windows xp , some of the other messenger clients being the DEFAULT app, or something to do with norton -
but my issues no longer exists
tell me if this helps at all

I am using XP Pro with Office 2000

I have a Notebook that is connected by network to a printer that hangs off
a PC running Windows ME.

The Printer is an HP 3820. The lastest HP (XP) drivers are installed. I have
checked with HP

With the Notebook connected to the network (cable) I am able to print and
use both Word and Excel fine.

Now the problem.

After I remove the cable (Cat 5e) that connects the Notebook to the Wall
outlet, and I open Word and try and make changes to Page Setup I get and
error. If I open Excel and attempt to change the font I get the same error.
The error is a text message call "appcompat.txt". Connect the cable again
and all works fine.

I have searched using Google and found that many users of XP get this error
message. I appears to be with drivers. In my case I would say it is because
Word and Excel cannot find the printer. The really strange thing is that if
I search Mighty Microsoft I get NOTHING, they have never heard of
"appcompat.txt".

Does anyone have any ideas? they would be appreciated.

I had a user turn off error reporting... I have yet to see another problem due to this.

click Start, Run. type: msconfig
the System Configuration Utility opens.
click the Services tab.
clear the "Error Reporting Service" check box, and then click OK.
Restart to reboot your system.

I wonder if you will see the same thing.

Like JC above I got this problem right after I upgraded Morpheus. Explorer would not launch in a non-privileged user account but would in a administrator account.
I first tried solving the problem by removing all spyware software from my computer using SPYWARE Nuker. Worked as advertised but no luck...
In my case the MS Error report pointed to a DLL which Explorer called. This DLL as it turned out looked like a leftover from the morpheus install (definitely not a MS DLL).
I backed it up then deleted it.
Problem solved...
DLL name was moz030715s.dll

Possible fix for some of the above problems?

Under internet options in IE 6 uncheck the 'allow 3rd party browsers' (will need to run a restart). This will enable you to analyse if there is a 3rd party browser problem. I had problems with Kazaar and an Alexa toolbar.

hope this has helped someone out there.

Possible Fix:

I found out that I had a Virus called Win32/Parite - transferred from my old HD.

Get a virus scanner and check if you have problems with opening EXEs (e.g games).

The virus atatches itself to exes and alters the command flow - creating tmp files and spreading itself.

hello again,
i´d reconfigure my system with an nvidia card with the newest drivers, but the same problem appears. although it can´t be a problem with the ati drivers because only a few applications and games crashes( for example windows media, hiphop ejay 4, iexplorer if i want to open .pdf documents etc.). a bad habbit is that i can´t fix the problem with the windows media player, even if i reinstall an older or newer version of it. every time i want to open a file with it media player opens and a second later the programm crashes, but windows posts no error report :-( so i don´t know if it is a matter of the appcompat.txt error .
i´m searching after a solution every day, but the only thing that i could find is, that the problem could be solved with ad-aware 6. have to check this :-D

I am having the same difficulties. I receive the error when I use Ytunnel and Yahoo! Messenger. It started earlier when I went on a deleting rampage in order to gain back some more space on my puny 16.5 gig drive. I think I might have deleted some .dll files which were actually meant to survive.

Ytunnel works alone, Messenger works alone, but when I try to run the two together there is a compatibility issue. I tried patching the XP Hotfix Q328310; that didn't work (dknyfave). I think the bottom line is that I am missing a crucial file.

Then again, I've also been running spyware killers all day, from Search and Destroy bot to AdAware to a AShampoo Optimizer, with which I made a point to delete all duplicate .dll files. Then the problem started happening.

I also accidentally deleted (dumbass I am) a %system root% files I think, without thinking, and I've read some suggestions which might entail this as being another culprit to the problem.

Hitherto I've only had the problem between Ytunnel and Messenger, but I haven't gone through and tested all other programs which might carry the same problem.

The error signature is as this:

AppName: ypager.exe AppVer: 5.6.0.1351 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00e33690

And when Windows XP sends the error to Microsoft, I get this included:

C:\DOCUME~1\David\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER3F.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

This particular file is no longer located anywhere on my computer, which means I must have deleted it without thinking twice. Could this .txt be the problem?

In another .txt file I get this:

not from WER3F.tmp.dir00, but from:

C:\Documents and Settings\David\Local Settings\Temp\WER4.tmp.dir00

I get --

Excuse my ignorance, but WHAT??!!! LOL

I think you're on to something, Mercy. I'll go back and reread your posts.

I am guessing we all have some version of the

Network Associates / McAfee Virus Scan program in common as this is what's causing it! I have read thousands of posts on this issue on the web and it does not seem to matter what program it is that is screwing up (IExplorer, WinRAR, Games etc) what seems to be the problem is running the above mentioned virus programs on the XP platform. I hav found a solution (shutting of the Download scan) but it isn't a good one since it makes your Outlook etc vulnerable to viruses so I will keeep on looking. If only nai.com had some patch for this..

A few times a message has appeared on my screen suddenly telling me that NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM was going to shut down my PC. All you can do is save your work and basically take it like a man unforunately and let your computer reboot.

This is a security flaw in Microsoft Windows, mainly NT/XP/Server.
If you see this message you should install Windows updates as soon as possible. There is basically someone out there sending data to your PC causing this to happen.

Advisory Warning to all users of the following operating systems:

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Services Edition
Microsoft Windows 2000
Microsoft Windows XP
Microsoft Windows Server 2003

Your Microsoft Operating System may potentially be under attack by HACKER ACTIVITY. The vulnerability attack can fool software into accepting insecure commands that could let intruders steal data, delete files or eavesdrop on e-mails.

Due to the seriousness of this vulnerability the Department of Homeland Security and Microsoft encourages system administrators and computer owners to update vulnerable versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems as soon as possible.

Our recommendation is to please go to:

http://microsoft.com/technet/treevi...in/MS03-026.asp to install the patch immediately.

It's about graphics, and I can't play some games. I hate ATI 9800. I think it has something to do with direct X, and graphic drivers. We all may have ATI graphic-card.

First of all, ya'll are nuts. I've noticed we're all running XP. I've also noticed that it is NOT yahoo that's having this problem. Its the XP software. I get the error when I try and run Xmen2 on my computer.. i can see the first screen then it gives me the appcompat error. I don't know how to solve it.. but lets take a vote.. HOW MANY OF US ARE RUNNING Kazaa.. THEN RAN A ANTI VIRUS OR SPYWARE PROGRAM? does anyone look @ exactly every file being deleted? o0o0o0o have you guys ever thought that this file could be deleted by the spyware?

Amanda
Person that's running cheetachat, yahoo, msn 6.0 .. AND Kazaa (lite) (I'll try uninstalling it and repost in a few minutes) (also I downloaded the file from DC++ which it's only this 1 Xmen2a and Xmen2b file.. which i'm sure is a codec thing for me.. the cause is different for everyone, but i'm sure the solution is all the same.. UNINSTALL XP AND GET 2000!!)

Bah (Alphie)

ok uninstalling kazaa.. i'm gonna attempt to download the file.. it must be missing that file or something.. hmm - I'm about 2 seconds from tossing XP and getting 2000.. I only installed it for the auto plug n play not knowing 2000 has that problem.. and those hidden firewalls sucks ass too :(

If you're receiving the...

"C:\DOCUME~1\Username\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER??.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt"

***(I put ?? because the file name changes, especially if you try to delete it manually)...

... error and it affects games, Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, and just about any other program ... then go to Webroot's website and download the "try it for free" version of Spy Sweeper. After you install the "try it for free" version, run it and quarantine all spyware.

The program requires you to Quarantine (which encrypts and copies the spyware to a quarantine folder and removes it from its original location) all spyware before you can permanently delete them from your system so you can see how your system and programs run when the spyware is inoperable.

If everything's fine and/or runs better ... then go ahead and delete the quarantined spyware. If a program isn't working right, then you'll probably want to restore the spyware that's connected to that program.

During your initial sweep, in the results, you can click on "+" next to the name of the spyware to see where it's located. You can also remove individual traces of spyware by clicking on the "+" next to the name under the quarantine tab and then checking the box next to the specific trace you want to delete.

I can't say with 100% certainty, but I think the APPCOMPAT.TXT error has to do with TRANSPONDER (vx2) Adware. Here is an excerpt from Webroots Spy Definitions page:
==
Description:

Name: Transponder (vx2)

Author: Mindset Interactive

Category: Adware

Threat Assessment: Medium

Description:
Transponder is a browser helper object that may display pop-up advertisements based on your Web surfing habits.

Characteristics:
Transponder has the ability to track the Web sites you visit, terms entered into search engine fields, and terms entered into online forms. This program may also collect personal information such as your name, email address and computer configuration. The collected information may be used to deliver targeted pop-up advertisements.

Transponder also has the ability to display advertisements at a rate based on how quickly you surf the Web. With this feature enabled, pop-up advertisements might appear to come from the Web page you are viewing rather than from Transponder.

Method of Infection:
Transponder is bundled with numerous free software programs. Transponder may also be installed via ActiveX drive-by-download from pornographic pop-up advertisements. A "drive-by-download" is a program that automatically downloads itself on your computer without your knowledge or consent. Drive-by-downloads can be initiated simply by clicking on an advertisement or visiting a Web site.
==

So if (vx2)Transponder appears under the "Remove" tab after you run your sweep, click on the "+" to see if it's connected to the APPCOMPAT.TXT error (I'm just curious ... so if you find that that's the location ... write back and let me know) and quarantine it and if nothing else ... AT LEAST REMOVE THIS ADWARE FROM YOUR SYSTEM!!!

I had a friend with this problem and I think I traced it to the (vx2)Transponder Adware and if it's not directly connected to the APPCOMPAT.TXT ... then I really believe it's what causes the appcompat.txt file and the error.

This worked for my friend, write back and let me know if any of you try it and how it worked.

GOOD LUCK!

***When I installed the Spy Sweeper in my friend's PC and ran the inital sweep (it found like 20+), I didn't bother to check the original locations of the spyware because I wasn't even sure what I was looking for. But after seeing that quarantining and removing the spyware found returned my friend's PC to a better than before condition, I checked the "Session Log" under the "Results" tab in Spy Sweeper and really believe that APPCOMPAT.TXT was related to the (vx2)Transponder Adware. So if you do find out, please write back and let me know. Thanks.

Just another note, my friend couldn't open IE or any folder on his PC because Windows Explorer would give him the same error with the APPCOMPAT.TXT file being included in the error report ... so his PC was pretty useless at the time.

If anyone else is having this trouble, I found that he could connect to the i-net through MSN Explorer. I downloaded Webroots's Spy Sweeper using MSN Explorer and clicked on "OPEN FILE" instead of "SAVE" since I couldn't open any folders. If you want to save the file though, I think saving it to your desktop would work too.

On a final note, I did notice that when using MSN Explorer, it still wouldn't run Java applications, so I think (vx2)Transponder affects that too.

**APPCOMPAT.TXT issue fixed!!**

After months of troubleshooting this problem I have finally managed to identify and resolve it on my PC. It was the most frustrating issue I have ever encountered with my PC. Although I knew the problem wasn't hardware based, out of complete frustration, I even went so far as to RMA my mobo (A7N8X), Video card (Radeon 9700), HDD 80 gig Maxtor and memory (Mushkin pc3500 2x512 dual channel) to no avail. I had reformatted my HDD uncountable times, reinstalling everything in an attempt to isolate the occurance. I finally managed to narrow it down and avoid the problem completely.

The issue is caused by a video driver conflict with Windows Media Player 9. It can result after Media Player 9, the codec update or the critical patch that becomes available once you have installed media player 9 is downloaded. I am referring to the 3 seperate Media player downloads off of the Windows update site. I have not be able to narrow it further than that as the error happens sporatically and I have encountered the problem at various points when installing any of the 3 mentioned downloads.

ALSO, if you are using Adaware or some other Spyware removal software, a new Windows Media Player 9 registry entry gets reconized by spyware detection programs. Pay very close attention, as deleting it WILL create the problem, if you haven't already begun experiencing it by simply downloading media player and it's updates.

By avoiding Media Player 9 and all of its updates you can steer clear of the Appcompat.txt issue. That's what I have chosen to do and I have not run into the problem since. If you do download Media Player 9 and use Spyware removal software, DO NOT delete the new registry entry it creates and you should not have any problems.

I hope this helps the many people out there who have been struggling with this issue, like me, for far too long! Please post any successes or failures as I am curious if my resolution to the issue will work for everyones situation.

A possible solution (it worked for me and is sooo simple)...I created a new windows user account and deleted the old one! Don't have any idea how it worked...but it did! I'm on XP, so I don't know if it will work on any other operating system! Best bet is to try it!

Woody

PS if it doesn't work...I can't help...sorry

This way you can use wmp9 AND Adaware 6 (It does with me anyway, try running regclean! My problems were solved, if not you can undo what regclean did!)

For what it's worth:-

I have been getting this same error as well and having read hundreds of posts on this I have drawn the following conclusions:-

I have just re-installed XP on a newly formatted hard drive;
I have very few programs running at the moment as I didn’t want to waste loads of time re-installing only to find I still had problems;
I have no Kazza, no Yahoo, no spyware detectors, no games installed;
I do however have Norton Anti Virus, Go Back, System Works;

When re-installing I just used the drivers on the XP disk and not the ones which came with the software. After the re-format and XP loaded I installed Norton stuff first then went straight to windows update, my CD-Rom already came with SP1 on.

Downloading the updates went fine but when it tried to re-install them the PC just shut down and then re-booted with the error message. Using system restore and go back I reverted the hard drive prior to the problem starting then without downloading anything else it happened again.

Many people have reported problems running games which may indicate that it’s hardware.

Initially I thought of over heating problems, my PC had been on for some considerable time by then, and others have reported problems with gaming. Some games will put the PC under sufficient load to increase temps on the CPU or graphics card, but then I read about systems running at <40 degrees having the same problem.

I then looked at graphics cards as this seems to be a common belief as well. I am running an ATI Radeon 8500 but the same problem is being reported on Nvida cards, and others. I don’t therefore think that it’s a specific make of graphics card. There’s also a myriad of different Mobo’s suffering the problem.

The RAM was the next issue, again, most people have tested this and found it to be fine. That therefore is most of the major hardware done. Which got me thinking that the only other thing which would have stayed constant throughout this whole re-formatting exercise is the BIOS, which incidentally I flashed about two days before this whole torrid thing started.

I’m going to try and re-flash back to an older version tonight and let you know what happens. I know the above is not a solution, and may well be totally wrong, but I thought it would help to collate a lot of thoughts.

Hey, I had this same problem with Kazaa Lite and fixed the problem by going into add/remove programs, and there was 2 versions of kazaa, and one of kazaa lite. One was called Kazaa 2.1.1 and the other was 2.6, I uninstalled the 2.6 version which also has bullguard on it... Now it seems to be working fine. Hope I helped some of you out if your having the problem using that particular program.

Further to my last post, I could not flash the bios as it would not let me revert to an older version from windows and having had so much trouble recently I couldn't face a bios flash. However, I did re-install my Via drivers and guess what - no problems so far and this was three days ago now. Maybe this has fixed it?

I have also un-installed GO Back and put on an older version.

had this problem too. I spent hours on the net trying to find an answer and had no luck. I realized that everyone had said they replaced every part in their system, reformated coutless times, and reinstalled windows over and over. I had figured it was something with the motherboard. I went into the BIOS setting and changed the memory setting from "by spd" to "by spec" and it worked for me.

I hope this helps.

I also got this problem, today it was acctually... I was playing CS a couple of hours ago then I got tired of it and left... while I was sorting som files on my harddrive I saw that there was an BIOS upgrade for my motherboard (Abit KD7) that I hadnt used so I had Bios ver: DN and was going to upgrade to BIOS ver: EC. So I decided to flash my BIOS (even though I usually don't do it if I don't have a clean comp.) So all was well I flashed the BIOS and everything was working fine. So i thought I should play some more CS and then I got this error msg about appcompat.txt I got a bit mad and tried to start up the game again (since many programs crash for no apperent reason from time to time.) ... But I got the same error msg again. Tried to end a few processes and start the game a couple of more times but there was nothing... So I decided to search for the problem on the internet and I got to this page. So now I belive that the problem lies in the new BIOS upgrade. So I will first try to change some options in the BIOS and if that doesn't work I will see if I can "downgrade" my BIOS to the previous version. *Hope this works* (and helps =)

Now I've got rid of the problem... even if the problem wasn't the BIOS... for me it acctually was the Sound driver that I updated just before I updated my BIOS. The problem was that Sensaura 3DPA started when CS started sience I had the enable EAX option on in CS so whenever there was a sound that had a sort of 3D effect CS crashed... I just disabled the option in the game and now it works fine. Now I'm just hoping that this new audio driver won't cause any more problems... well that's still better than a BIOS problem I guess. Sorry for any inconvenience I might have caused.

I been run mY XP for about 12 months now, I encounter the WER4.tmp\dir00 problem after I updated Windows XP with SP1. Ever since the message keep poping up. I use the Windows system restore feature to restore from a last save point, but fail. try uninstall SP1, that fails too. Then run the norton virus program and detected a few virus. but I doubt it was the problem. Finally, I reformatted the entrie hard drive and reinstall XP with no additional software installed, the error appears again. And now I encounter WER8.tmp\dir00, WER27.tmp\dir00 ect... To troubleshoot the problem I open the Event viewer, under system log, in which every WER*\dir00 error I encounter, the log record a ERROR entry with an event ID 7034, and stated that "THE POWER MANAGER TERMINATED UNEXPECTEDLY" I don't know if this has to do with the power supply. Anyway I need some help on this if anyone can lend me a hand.

I have the same problem too only it started two weeks ago. I have tried everything and no avail. Does anyone know exactly what this WER is? My computer has not been running properly because of this. I have update my securities and ran the virus check, thinking this would help but NOT! I even wrote to Microsoft but have not heard anything from them about how to solve this problem. I would appreciate any suggestion on how to fix this.

I've been having this problem for awhile now. It used to happen only occasionally while on IE. Now, *every* time I try to open IE, before the IE window has even popped up, I get the appcompat.txt error message.

I switched to MSN explorer...which seems to be fine...but now the error is popping up for other programs, usually triggered by something (i.e. when I try to change the font color on a web page I'm working on). It's the most annoying thing ever. I'm such a computer dummy, I have no idea what most of the suggestions on this forum entail (though I have run spyware detectors and turned off error reporting...nothing is working).

Anyway, I went searching for "appcompat.txt" on the web, and it took me to a match on the Microsoft Spain site...(except it's in English).

According to the site, WER is "Windows Error Reporting," and appcompat.txt is a file generated by the computer that contains *information* about the error (so it's not the error itself, or related directly to the error).

Address to explanation:

http://www.microsoft.com/spain/technet/recursos/articulos/directions/articulos/julio0303.asp

Oh well. I wish I knew what to do to make IE work again. Whatever this error is (since it's not related to appcompat.txt), it pisses me off that now it's refusing to let me use other programs as well. Almost as if it's seen that I'm giving up on IE, so now it's going to try to annoy me some other way.
